Our idols’ inspirations: PLDT’s Dy, Reyes, Alcantara reveal their biggest supporters.
Meet the amazing people who stood by PLDT High Speed Hitters Kianna Dy, Mika Reyes, and Angge Alcantara since day one with their unwavering support and love.
The elite athletes of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) may be some of the best on the court, but let’s be honest, no one makes it to the top alone. Staying at the top requires support, and sports at this level come with both tough lows and exciting highs. The PLDT High Speed Hitters know this well and are quick to show gratitude to those who’ve helped them along the way, especially as they compete in the longest PVL All-Filipino Conference yet.
For opposite spiker Kim Kianna Dy, her boyfriend, international basketball star Dwight Ramos, has been her rock, especially during her recovery from a tough knee injury in 2023. “I have to give him credit for being there since day one, especially during my injury,” says Dy. “He’s been my constant support, inspiring me to keep pushing and reminding me to be patient with myself. As an athlete, he understands the frustration of being sidelined and knows exactly what I’m going through.”
Rookie setter Angge Alcantara expresses deep gratitude for the support she’s received throughout her career. “I’m so thankful for my family and partner who’ve always been there for me, on and off the court,” says Alcantara, who’s taken on a bigger role as the team’s setter while veteran Kim Fajardo steps back. “And I’m really grateful to Coach Russelle Galang for guiding me from the start of my volleyball journey until now.”
When it comes to support, Mika Reyes knows her family and loved ones play a huge role. “My parents, siblings, relatives, teammates, and fans are my biggest motivation,” says the 2022 PVL Invitational Conference best middle blocker. “Every game, I play not just for myself, but for them.”
Throughout the different inspirations in their lives, all three players share one consistent source of strength: the unwavering support of their fans.
“The fans are such a big part of our morale,” says Dy. “Whether they’re cheering live or from home, it reminds us that we’re not just playing for ourselves, but for everyone who believes in us.”
“I get my strength from them too,” adds Alcantara. “They’ve been there for us, and I don’t want to let them down. I’m so grateful to be part of the PLDT family.”
Reyes shares, “Their support means everything. Knowing they believe in us, especially during tough times, keeps us going and gives us that extra boost.”
After finishing the PVL elimination round with 8 wins and 3 losses, including a thrilling victory over the Creamline Cool Smashers, the PLDT High Speed Hitters are heading to the qualifiers with renewed confidence. With a solid record and the love of their fans, they are more determined than ever to chase their first PVL title.
“We remind each other that this journey is one we’re all in together,” says Dy. “‘Pusong PLDT’ means giving our all, no matter how tough it gets. The love we have for the team and the game pushes us to keep going.”
